CHOOSING AND USING YOUR ASSESSMENT
A practical guide to typing and data entry tests for hiring
When a keyboard test helps, what to look for, and how to use the results.
When is a typing test useful?
A typing test helps when the job involves a lot of keyboard work: reception, administration, secretarial work, customer service by email or chat, and data entry. It is a quick, objective check of a skill that CVs often describe loosely, such as “fast typist”.
For data entry, keying figures accurately often matters more than typing words quickly. The number pad test focuses on that.
Speed or accuracy: which matters more?
For most roles, accuracy comes first. A mistyped invoice number or postcode costs more time than a slightly slower typist. Set the accuracy the job needs, then compare speed among the candidates who meet it.
How to use the results
Agree the level the role needs before you review results. Read them alongside the rest of the assessment and the interview. If a result is marked for checking, look at the detail and talk to the candidate before you draw any conclusion.
